Robust price-setting newsvendor model with interval market size and consumer willingness-to-pay

چکیده
We consider a price-setting newsvendor problem with partial information. The newsvendor does not know the price-dependent probability distribution of demand, but is able to estimate lower and upper limits of the market size and consumer willingness-to-pay. The objective is to minimize the maximum loss in expected profit, or minimax regret. We derive closed-form expressions for optimal quantity and price and identify managerial insights. & 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

What is consumer surplus, and how is it measured
What is consumer surplus, and how is it measured? ANSWER: Consumer surplus measures the benefit to buyers of participating in a market. It is measured as the amount a buyer is willing to pay for a good minus the amount a buyer actually pays for it. For an individual purchase, consumer surplus is the difference between the willingness to pay, as shown on the demand curve, and the market price. F...
متن کاملIntertemporal Price Discrimination with Forward-Looking Consumers: Application to the US Market for Console Video-Games
Firms in durable good product markets face incentives to intertemporally price discriminate, by setting high initial prices to sell to consumers with the highest willingness to pay, and cutting prices thereafter to appeal to those with lower willingness to pay. A critical determinant of the profitability of such pricing policies is the extent to which consumers anticipate future price declines,...
متن کاملOn consumer preferences and the willingness to pay for term life insurance
We run a choice-based conjoint analysis for term life insurance with a sample of 2,017 German consumers, for which data has been collected through web-based experiments. Individual-level part worth utility profiles are estimated by means of a hierarchical Bayes model. Drawing on the elicited preference structures, we compute relative attribute importances and different willingness to pay measur...
متن کاملHedonic Pricing under Uncertainty: A Theoretical Consumer Behavior Model
A model of consumer behavior has been formulated by using an additive utility function and the hedonic pricing approach, in a virtual market. Since, there is a time lag between ordering and purchasing products (goods and services) online and receiving them, it means the consumer makes decision under uncertainty. The level of satisfaction with products with distinctive characteristics is describ...
